The Mission of Project Liberty Ship

T he primary mission of Project Liberty Ship is to preserve, maintain and operate the World War II Liberty ship S.S. JOHN W. BROWN to serve as an operating vessel and living museum in paying tribute to the shipbuilders who built the Liberty ships, the merchant seamen who sailed them, and the U.S. Naval Armed Guard who defended them.

As Project Liberty Ship fulfills its mission, it will:

  • Preserve, maintain and operate the S.S. JOHN W. BROWN in a historically faithful configuration.
  • Present museum-quality exhibits contemporary to World War II.
  • Make available to the public educational programs with substantial curricula devoted to the education of young people.
  • Collect and conserve artifacts and archival material pertinent to the S.S. JOHN W. BROWN in particular and World War II Liberty ships in general.
