T he Naval Historical Detachment was formed in 1993 as a support organization for the Armed Guard veterans of the JOHN W. BROWN. Detachment members are also members of Project Liberty Ship and assist the Armed Guard veterans with various restoration and maintenance projects on the ship.

Members of the detachment have been instrumental in efforts to adapt the forward 3"/50 gun and four 20mm guns to gas operating systems. During the BROWN's cruises, NAVHISDET members man the guns to defend the ship as their Armed Guard veteran counterparts did during the war. In addition to manning the guns, detachment members also provide details for the wreath laying ceremony and welcoming dignitaries aboard; provide crowd control and dock security; provide educational interpretation on the life and work of the World War II bluejacket; handle lines with the deck force; and help with underway preparations.

The Naval Historical Detachment's mission is to support Project Liberty Ship and honor the World War II Armed Guard veterans by teaching the BROWN's visitors about the proud history of the US Navy sailor, the way he lived aboard a Liberty ship, the tools of his trade, and the sacrifices he made to deliver the materials of war for our country.
