Ordinary seaman, deck department SS JOHN W BROWN. Writer of articles on the BROWN and its crew in The Baltimore Sun, publications of Project Liberty Ship.

Only previous big ship experience: sailing to Europe and back in 1958 and in 1962, one time on a former Victory ship turned over to Holland America Line and converted to passenger liner GROOTE BEER.

Newspaper editor and reporter for 40 years, retired after 36 years at The Baltimore Sun and The Baltimore Evening Sun, 1963-1999 (covered stories from man on the moon to Blackie Blockston on the BROWN). Last managing editor, Baltimore Evening Sun, (R.I.P 1910-1995). Education: Williams, BA, and Columbia, MS in journalism.

Family: Married to Hilda for 40 years. Three married children, Jennifer, Peter and Matthew. Five grandsons.

Major hobby besides grandchildren and BROWN: mountain hiking and introducing others to the hills. Summited more than 100 mountains in East, Rockies, Sierras and Andes, some above 14,000 feet in Colorado and California (including Pikes Peak, Longs Peak, Mt. Sherman, Mt. Whitney). Climbed all 65 peaks over 4,000 feet in New England. Led many up Old Rag Mountain in Virginia.

Has written two oral history books, "Good Shipmates: The Restoration of the Liberty Ship John W. Brown, 1942-2006, Vols. 1 and 2" (Glencannon Press, 2006, 2007).
