Pete Goddard
Pete Goddard died on November 8, 2011, at his home in Rusthall, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, following a short illness. In 1947, 16 year old Pete Goddard trained at the Gravesend Sea School before shipping out as the "Bosun's Peggy" on the Shell Oil tanker MIRALDA. Until 1960, Pete sailed as chief cook and chief steward on ships of the Union Castle Line, P&O Line, Orient Line, Royal Mail Line, General Steam Navigation Co., London Greek Shipping Co., and many others. After leaving the sea, Pete worked first in precast concrete construction and then as a maintenance engineer until retiring in 1995. Following his retirement, Pete worked as a civilian instructor with the Sea Cadet Corps at TS BRILLIANT in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. Pete served as Vice Chairman of the London Branch of the Merchant Navy Association. Along with two other members, Bert Hunt and Dave Evans, Pete spent several summer vacations coming to Baltimore to work on and to crew the BROWN.
