Doug Cochran has been involved in historical interpretive work for over
20 years. He has worked as a historical volunteer and educator on
programs sponsored by the U.S. National Park Service, the Virginia State
Parks Department, the Navy Memorial Foundation, the Calvert Marine
Museum, and the SS JOHN W. BROWN.
He is a 1983 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and served
actively for six years with one tour as an Engineering Watch Officer and
Damage Control Assistant aboard the USCGC UNIMAK, and one tour at Coast
Guard Headquarters.
Doug has been a member of Project Liberty Ship since 1994 and is a plank
owner in the Naval Historical Detachment (NAVHISDET) that he currently
commands. In addition to coordinating the NAVHISDET's work on various
restoration projects, Doug focuses the efforts of the historical
interpreters toward bringing the BROWN alive with the sights and sounds
of an armed merchant vessel during World War Two.
He is currently employed as a Quality Engineer with Quality Systems
Applications and supports the U.S. Navy on its Aegis Destroyer new
construction program.
