Rick Bauman became master of the SS John W. Brown in March 2008, following the death of Captain George Maier. Prior to becoming master, Rick had served as the ship's chief mate for 19 years. He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point in 1975, and is currently a Chesapeake Bay pilot. Rick has been a member of the Board of Directors since 1988.

He has also been responsible for coordinating the efforts to upgrade the onboard museums and displays to improve the appeal of the ship to people of all ages.
