A 2001 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York, Karen is currently in her apprenticeship with the Sandy Hook Pilots Association of New York and New Jersey. While at Kings Point she was awarded an Outstanding Unit Ribbon for her part in the September 11, 2001, relief efforts, transporting fire fighters back and forth in New York harbor via tug and small motorboats. During her Academy years she realized her dream of visiting all seven continents.

Karen has been a volunteer crewman on the BROWN since she was twelve years old and says the BROWN and its crew have helped set her life's course. She currently serves on the ship as third mate and hopes to pilot her one day if the BROWN should visit New York again.

Karen was elected to the Board of Directors of Project Liberty Ship in 2008.
