  • How did you get interested in the merchant marine? Uncle was in merchant marine. Army and Navy turned me down because of color blindness.

  • When and where did you sign up? June 1943. Entered Sheepshead Bay aged 17.

  • What training school or schools did you attend? Sheepshead Bay and Charleston Harbor training with DUKWS.

  • What was your first ship? HARPERS FERRY. I was seasick from New York to Panama.

  • Where did you go? What cargoes did you carry? New York to Panama to Carthana to Aruba, then to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Cargo of oil (bunker C) for convoys leaving Halifax.

  • Did you see any action? Describe in detail? Missed it all.

  • How many ships did you sail on during the war? Too many to remember. Sailed on AMERICAN SCOUT. Cookie also sailed on her but not at same time.

  • Did your ship participate in any invasions? No.

  • Did your ship operate in convoy? Once. Atlantic? No. Pacific? One (small)

  • What did you do after the War? Stayed in for a while. Then became an electrician.

  • Read about PLS in magazine and stopped by on way to New Jersey a few years back.

  • Did infra-red survey of BROWN's wiring.
